Tour the St. Augustine Old Jail Museum for a truly "captivating" experience.
Built in 1891 by railroad magnate Henry Flagler, the St. Augustine Old Jail resembles a resort hotel more than a maximum-security facility. Conditions were harsh for those imprisoned within, however, especially during the tenure of Sheriff Joe Perry, known as the "America's Most Feared Sheriff." Your "Jailer" tour guides will show you close-up views of the sheriff's quarters where he and his family lived adjacent to 72 prisoners, as well as the kitchen they used to prepare meals for the prisoners and themselves.
You'll learn about crime and punishment in 19th century Florida and see first hand what is what like to be an inmate during that period as you visit the prisoners' holding cells, the maximum-security area, Death Row and the gallows which ended the lives of numerous criminals on this site. The St. Augustine Old Jail Museum also includes a large collection of guns and other weapons used in actual crimes.
This tour is also available as part of a SUPER SAVER combo with other St. Augustine museums and the original Old Town Trolley Hop On Hop Off Tour. For details, please see St. Augustine Museums & Old Town Trolley Hop On Hop Off Tour Combo - SUPER SAVER.
